Wuppertal, 1963

Nam June Paik and Wolf Vostell at Exposition of Music, Galerie Parnass, Wuppertal, 1963 This crumpled photocopy was pinned to my studio wall for years (the source book long forgotten). I dug it out tonight after seeing these amazing photos over at ROLU (thanks Matt!)

onion skins of tenderness
Alastair Galbraith Cluster 7inch (Stalemate, Raining here/Pip Proud, Water in my ears) Raffmond, Germany, 1994Water in my ears There could be no better format for these 4 songs which, once the needle touches the record, end almost before you can step away from the turntable. Just crouch nearby and close your eyes. This record also introduced me to Pip Proud. Thank you and thank you, Mr. Galbraith. (If any of the involved parties would like for me to remove the audio, please let me know.)
New full length on Siltbreeze. featuring this song! Water in My Ears and Raining Here later appeared on the full length Talisman (now reissued)

As you wake up in the morning.
Rice Field Silently Riping in the Night by Reiko Kudo, Majikick/Periodic Document, Toyko/Minneapolis!(recorded and mixed at Shunju pottery workshop, Tobe, Ehime, Japan, 2000)Mihoko
Son of Man
Of all the Maher Shalal Hash Baz related projects I've heard, this CD is still my favourite. Quiet, rickety, and beautiful. (If any of the involved parties would like me to remove the audio, please let me know.)
Error in performance dominates MSHB cassette, which is like our imperfect life. If perfect music is only heard through imperfection, at this state of things, MSHB, the king of error, could barely be heard. -Tori Kudo from the liner notes of From A Summer to Another Summer by Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Geographic, 2000

Winston Wuttunee
See The arrow by Winston Wuttunee, Sunshine Records, no date (mid to late 70's), recorded at Century 21 Studios in Winnipeg. Winston Wuttunee was born in Saskatchewan and is still active today as a singer, lecturer, and comedian. This record is fairly diverse, with songs sung in English, French, and Cree.---It's this one song, Wunisca (meaning "wake-up" in Cree), that I keep coming back to:

It's Christmas Time/Happy New Year To You!

It's Christmas Time/Happy New Year to You! by The Qualities, Satur(n) Records, 1956(?)
This is a rare and messed up vocal/doo-wop record produced by Sun Ra and Alton Abraham. Sun Ra plays harmonium. Vocalists are unidentified.
Happy Holidays to all. I'm going to try to take a break from posting until the new year.

truth forever bending/always hopeful never ending

Don't It Drag On by Chris Smither, Tomato Records, 1971 (art direction and design by Milton Glaser, photographs by Duane Michaels) One song that I return to over and over again---I've Got Mine. Listen here. See also this cover by Kria Brekkan and Avey Tare. Troubles come by threes/doing what they wanna/instead of doing what they oughta/ I've got mine./Some are quickly passed/others seem to last/hold on.
