we're big D'Aulaire fans here. There are nicely weird geometric creatures on the end papers and/or borders of their Book of Norse Myths, too.
And we've found their Pocahontas, if pretty naturalistic, is a nice alternative to Disney. It's still my second-favorite Pocahontas after John Alcorn's:
